Cleansing is the first production by La Compagnie Gàara,
premiered at the French Cultural Centre, Nairobi, in May 1997.
It is a choreographic enquiry on
images of cleaning. One way or another the idea of cleaning pervaded
every conceivable aspect of our existence. From mundane domestic
chore and polite social etiquette to hideous political monstruosity
or ritual of social rebirth, the concept of cleaning reccurs in
the infintely ephemeral masque.
This work is a quest for a
naked truth, constantly crossing the boundaries between dance, theatre
and ritual. Cleansing von the third prize of the Festival of African
Comtemporary Choreography in Luanda in April 1998.
Gàara,
the origines Cleansing is a choreographic collaboration created
by the three performers of the company. It is in the quest for artistic
authenticity within the new realms of its dual heritage afro-occidental
that La Compagnie Gàara is propelled.The company is made up of
an eclectic trio of highly individualistic performers with diverse artistic
and cultural backgrounds:
Afrah Tenambergen
Of German-Ethiopian origin, trained in classical ballet since she was
six.
Faustin Linyekula,
O f Congolese origin, "just an actor who understands the body",
he says, trained at the Atelier Theatral du Centre in Kisangani.
Opiyo Okach
Better known as Kenya's only professional mime, trained in London at the
Desmond Jones School of Mime and Physical Theatre.
