body evidence

I do the twist and shake, and hire to the highest bidder
I don colorful raffia for your independence and parade before VIPs and foreign dignitaries
I don veils of your faith, wear gowns of your justice, I self-destruct for the holiest bidder
I live reality tv, decorate the pages of fashion magazine and populate the streets of music video
In today's global connectedness multiple time, cultural and geographic spaces converge. At the peripheries of dominant 'civilization' the body inhabits and is inhabited by multiple sensibilities producing new heterogeneities and multiple states of identification.
‘Body Evidence’ is a multi-disciplinary - choreography & digital creation - project integrating performance, installation & projection design.
It is one of several works I’m developing as part of a longer term process over the coming years. It represents the evolution of my work towards multi-disciplinary context as well as the embracing of new technology in my artistic process. The creative process for ‘Body Evidence’ will seek convergence between choreographic approach informed by improvisation and instant composition practice, music composition based on procedural sound design and digital scenography featuring generative visuals to create an interactive & immersive performance environment.
‘Body Evidence’ questions our perceptions of each other and the extreme polarisations of the 21st century. In today's global connectedness multiple time, cultural and geographic spaces converge. At the peripheries of dominant 'civilization' the body inhabits and is inhabited by multiple sensibilities producing new heterogeneities and multiple states of identification.
As a performer working between continents my body has over the years invented, borrowed & cumulated body language & aesthetic sensibility from diverse cultural backgrounds and trends - africa, europe, asia etc. Cumulated vocabularies representative of 21st C states of global connectedness and polarisation. The body becomes a territory of multiplicity and transgression where diverse cultural, geographic, religious, ideologic & temporal frontiers converge in the same instant.
Negotiating and transgressing geographic, cultural and temporal frontiers is the body sincere, genuine and trustworthy; is it real and concrete or is it source origin, transit point and final destination of ideologic and religious propaganda, political and economic domination, marketing and commercial advertising strategy in local interaction and global connections; does it hold profound moral and spiritual integrity or is it imitative camouflage; counterfeit and ultimately deceptive as evidence of authenticity.
Perpetual site of engagement in social processes the body in the 21st century continues to defy static notions of authenticity, adopting new posture, displacing and dissimulating frontiers of ethnic, geographic and temporal identification. I’m interested in the mediatised & politicised images of the other and how they reflect and play on perceptions of identity and visions of the world.
Focusing on relations and interaction between the projected image, body and space as well as interaction between the spectator and the performance the intention of this project is to complete ‘Body Evidence’ and integrate digital creation in the choreography.
Through generative digital scenography based on realtime interactivity between the sound, image, video, the dance and the audience this process will seek to explore and redefine the physical place & metaphorical role of the spectator within the performance and his relation to the work.
